Vallemar Bluffs Conservation Area

Moss Beach Associates  (San Mateo County).

Jodi McGraw Consulting developed and is implementing a conservation plan to mitigate the impacts of a small-scale residential subdivision on rare plants and sensitive coastal terrace prairie community in Moss Beach, CA. This project has entailed:

  • Conducting rare plant surveys and mapping sensitive habitat within the site to identify areas for conservation and restoration;
  • Developing a management plan for the conservation area, including habitat restoration, management, monitoring, and an adaptive management framework to protect the site’s conservation values in perpetuity;
  • Implementing activities to restore the natural topography of the site, control invasive plants, and seed and plant site-collected native plants to increase rare plant populations and enhance native plant diversity;
  • Monitoring to track the rare plant populations and coastal terrace prairie community including in response to the restoration treatments.

The successful conservation and development project was lauded by the Community for Green Foothills as an example of compatible conservation and development.
